General Info
I'm committed to creating images that represent you in the
best light - images that you will be proud and excited to
send out and show others. That means getting to know you and
understanding what you need in a studio session. It is your
career that we're working on; I respect that and will contribute
positively to that. If you're open and prepared, youÌll get
great headshots.
The Shoot
Everybody needs and wants a different amount of coaching when
they shoot. It's okay if you're not sure how much you'll need
or want. It's my job to find out, intuitively and by asking.
First, I'll make sure we're on the same page, we have a good
idea of what you are going for (like what kind of looks/headshots),
and we agree on how to get there. We'll plan out some clothing
choices and some background and lighting choices. I'll give
you some tips for engaging the camera in general. We'll do
some test shots. We'll take a look at the test shots on a
TV monitor and make sure you really like what's going on there.
I like to see where you take things first and then step in
with ideas to make sure I think you're fully covered in terms
of having lots of great choices for now and in the future
with your headshots.
I have my secret tricks for getting great smiles, sexy looks,
and dramatic looks while still being inviting. I could tell
you those, but then . . . .
The most important thing I do is make sure you feel comfortable
when we begin and that you stay in that space. The more comfortable
you feel, the better you'll perform.
Ordering
Process
Within 24 hours of your shoot the images will be posted online
and you will be emailed a link to them. They remain up for
4 weeks. 1-2 weeks after the shoot your hard copy proofs and
preview disk will be mailed to you. Next, you email me your
order (specific details of ordering process are below). You
may order as early as you like. You may also order different
shots YEARS later. I save everything indefinitely.
Digital Advantage
With digital, I can shoot more for you and let you keep the
best, deleting the not-so good ones. I let you see on a monitor
all of the images of the shoot, so you can tell not only the
lighting, pose, clothes, framing, and makeupÛyou can tell
how the shoot is going. Plus, as I'm shooting I monitor and
instantly edit out a lot of the unusable shots (closed eyes,
etc.) that you would have been stuck with in film. The result:
more and better headshots.

Clothing for Headshots
The short version: Bring lots of tops/shirts darker than your
skintone. If you're dark skinned, also bring tops that a lighter
than your skin tone, but try not to bring white or very light
tops as your outermost layer. Light stuff is OK for UNDER
other tops. Bring at least 5-6 shirts for each look you want.
Bring long sleeve in addition to short sleeve; stay casual
and simple. Bring a pair of jeans or two; that's all you need
for the waist down. Don't bother bringing skirts, or even
slacks/chinos, unless you want a classic industrial look.
You need not bother bringing shoes/boots/etc., unless you
want to complete the feeling.
The Color Factor:
Now that headshots are going to color photos, especially for
commercial and film/tv, you have even more options. You can
bring colors that wouldn't work in just black and white. You
can bring colors that bring out your eyes. Subdued, solid
colors that aren't too light are the best. In black and white,
a light blue shirt doesn't work for light skinned people,
but now in color it does!
Obviously, you want to bring your favorite clothes, the ones
that make you feel attractive or special or important. In
addition, your clothes should never steal focus from your
face, solid colors are almost always better than prints. Clothes
should be pressed and fit perfect: not too tight or loose.
For a commercial headshot you should have fashionable casual
clothes (Gap, Banana Republic, etc.) Overall, darker clothes
work best. Our eye is drawn to light things, yet the eye must
be drawn to the face and eyes. Make sure you bring a few medium-toned
to dark-toned tops. Bring fresh clothing: new and crisp looking.
Variance is the key to selecting clothing for a shoot. If
all your shirts have the same type of collar, then the whole
shoot might all seem like the same look even though you've
changed. Think variance. Variance in: styles, fabric, texture,
necks, collars, casual, dress, casual-dress.
Press or Iron your clothes!
Don't be afraid to bring a bunch of clothes; give us plenty
to work with and choose together. Bring your favorite Cds,
or your iPod, too.
