CLOTHING FOR HEADSHOTS
The short version: Bring lots of tops/shirts darker than your skintone. If you’re dark skinned, also bring tops that a lighter than your skin tone, but try not to bring white or very light tops. Bring at least 4 shirts for each look you want. Bring long sleeve; stay casual and simple. Bring a pair of jeans or two; that’s all you need for the waist down. Don’t bother bringing skirts, or even slacks/chinos, unless you want a classic industrial look. You need not bother bringing shoes/boots/etc., unless you want to in order to complete the “feeling.”
Obviously, you want to bring your favorite clothes, the ones that make you feel attractive or special or important. In addition, your clothes should never steal focus from your face, solid colors are almost always better than prints. Clothes should be pressed and fit perfect: not too tight or loose. For a commercial headshot you should have fashionable casual clothes (Gap, Banana Republic, etc.)
Overall, dark clothes work best. Don't bother bringing light shirts / pastels unless you have darker skin. Black will not compete with any skin tone. Our eye is drawn to light things, yet the eye must be drawn to the face and eyes. Make sure you bring a few medium-toned to dark-toned tops.
Bring fresh clothing: new and crisp looking.
Variance is the key to selecting clothing for a shoot. If all your shirts have the same type of collar, then the whole shoot might all seem like the same look even though you've changed. Think variance. Variance in: styles, fabric, texture, necks, collars, casual, dress, casual-dress.
